‘Sports and Spirit

Women in area sports will be part of a new exhibit at The History Museum at the Castle, 330 E. College Ave., Appleton, that opens at 4 p.m. May 21. “Sports and Spirit,” which will be on display through 2011, will highlight how organized sports, from Little League to tavern leagues, individual athletes to teams, and players to fans, create and strengthen community ties.

The nearly 2,000-square-foot exhibit includes one-of-a-kind artifacts, large-scale graphics and multimedia technology. The opening reception will be at the museum, 330 E. College Ave., Appleton, from 4 to 8 p.m. May 21. Admission rates beginning May 21 are $7.50 for adults, $3.50 for children to age 5, $5.50 for seniors and students, and $20 for families. Museum members are admitted free.

 

Walk a Mile in her Shoes

All men are invited to walk a mile in a pair of women’s shoes as a symbolic gesture of support and to raise money for the Sexual Assault Crisis Center-Fox Cities at Memorial Park, Appleton, on May 31. The walk begins at 2 p.m., and the day will include entertainment, children’s activities and grilling by Mad Dog and Merrill. For more information, see www.sacc-foxcities.org.

 

‘Grease’

“American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks will star in “Grease” at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in downtown Appleton June 2 to 7. Hicks will play the teen angle in the show, which follows the high school romance of lovestruck Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko and features the hit songs “You’re the One That I Want,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “Summer Nights.” The play will be presented at 7:30 p.m. June 2 to 5, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. June 6 and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. June 7. Greek/Serb Festival

The 6th Annual Greek/Serb Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 6 at the Pierce Park Pavilion, Appleton. It will feature authentic Greek and Serbian food, ethnic music and folk dancing. It is sponsored by St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Appleton.

 

Webfooters

The Webfooters Water Ski Show Team will present its first performance of the year at 6 p.m. June 7 on the shores of the Wolf River in downtown Fremont. The Webfooters present free shows every Wednesday and Sunday from June 7 through Aug. 28.

The Webfooters are offering “Teach a Kid to Ski” days from noon to 4 p.m. June 21 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 11. The fee is $10 per child. For more information see www.webfooters.org.

 

Run/Walk for Cancer

Paintings of Joanna Rae Brinkman

The works of Appleton painter Joanna Rae Brinkman will be on display at American National Bank Fox Cities, 2200 N. Richmond St., Appleton, through June 12. Brinkman describes herself as an “action artist,” and her paintings reflect her exuberance. She has worked extensively in New York City, and is a recipient of the Artist-of-the-Year award from the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley. She has been represented by Spaightwood Galleries in Upton, Mass., and by The A. Corso Painting Gallery in Santa Fe, N.M.

Driver Safety

An AARP Driver Safety Program will be presented from noon to 4:30 p.m. June 8 in the Oakwood Room at Appleton Medical Center. EAA AirVenture

EAA AirVenture 2009 will run from July 27 to Aug. 2 at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh.

Among the highlights at this year’s fly-in convention are:

--The public debut of the WhiteKnight-Two mothership “Eve,” the latest step in space tourism

--The mammoth Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jetliner

--The cockpit crew of US Airways Flight 1549, who will discuss their emergency landing in the Hudson River

--More than 2,500 showplanes from vintage models to ultralights

Great Fall Kick-Off

Big & Rich will headline The Great Fall Kick-Off at 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Stadium View, 1963 Holmgren Way, Green Bay. The outdoor concert presented by the Brown County Tavern League will also include John Michael Montgomery. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Brown County D.A.R.E. and SafeRide programs. Leicht at Night

Leicht Memorial Park in downtown Green Bay will be the site of free concerts on Thursday nights this summer. Concerts begin at 5:30 p.m. and end by 10 p.m. On the schedule are:

Nashville Pipeline (July 9), Gin (July 16), Replica (July 23), Grand Union (July 30), Spin (Aug. 13), Sonic Circus (Aug. 20) and Johnny Wad (Aug. 27).

 

Burger Fest

The 21st Annual Burger Fest will be held Aug. 8 in downtown Seymour. The World’s Largest Hamburger Parade will begin at 11 a.m., and the hamburger eating contest will begin at 1 p.m. There will also be a “Hamburger Press” strength contest, ketchup slide, car show, bun run and Cracker Barrel magic show. All events will take place on Depot Street in downtown Seymour.

 

‘Church Basement Ladies’

William Christopher, best known for playing Father Mulcahy in the television show “M*A*S*H,” will be part of the cast of “Church Basement Ladies” when it returns to the Meyer Theater in downtown Green Bay Aug. 26 to 28.
