Coming out on top

I always looked forward to my phone interviews with Cathy Skell and Kristin Steede as they gave me updates while they competed on "The Biggest Loser" on NBC last season. No matter what had happened on the show the night before, they were always upbeat, optimistic and in good humor.

I’ve found that their positive attitude resonates just as strongly in person and they’re eager to share it. When they were guests at an American Heart Association Go Red Luncheon, a crowd gathered around the pair after lunch, asking for autographs and photos. They happily obliged all requests, including mine for the picture that appeared last month in our Out and About section.

This month they’ve moved from the popular Out and About section in the back of our magazine to the front cover, and we’re proud to have them in the top spot.

Thanks to their appearance on last season’s "The Biggest Loser," the mother-daughter pair have become local celebrities. Their egos haven’t kept pace with their growing popularity, however. The two are down-to-earth and understanding of the public’s curiosity about them and questions for them.

It’s great to see their enthusiasm. Sticking to a weight loss and exercise plan has shown them that they can do anything they put their minds to.

In this issue we get to share upbeat stories from other women who refuse to give up as well. Check out our centerspread for women who live life in the fast lane, race car drivers who are filled with adrenaline and determination when they hit the track.

Also check out our interview with Julie Carter-Moriva, a songwriter who will see what her future holds this summer. She’s keeping her fingers crossed as a country duo she works with competes for the top spot on CMT’s "Can You Duet"?

We wish her the best of luck, but if she doesn’t win she has to look no further than our cover ladies to see that you can be a winner even if you don’t take home the top prize.
