Members of various religious orders came together with the public to honor the 125th anniversary of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother at a Mass at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Oshkosh. A reception further honoring the Sisters followed.

Founded in 1883, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother began serving the Oshkosh community by opening St. Mary’s Hospital in 1891.

In spring 1918, the Sisters assumed administration of Lakeside Hospital and changed its name to Mercy Hospital. In 1968, St. Mary’s and Mercy Hospital merged to form Mercy Medical Center.

“The legacy that the Sisters have left on Mercy is felt every day,” said Bill Calhoun, president of Mercy Medical Center. “This hospital was founded on the values and ideals of a group of women dedicated to helping both the ill and the poor, and we spend every day honoring that commitment.

"Our employees, medical staff and volunteers honor that commitment, by living out our healing ministry, providing services that promote the health and well-being of the people we serve.”

During the past year, members of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother and their ministry partners have been celebrating the presence of the order with celebrations throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean.

“We are extremely proud to be celebrating such an important milestone,” General Superior of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, Sister M. Teresina said. “Countless people throughout the world have benefited from the work of our Sisters over the years.”

For the past 125 years, members of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother have been serving those in need in 75 localities on the continents of North and South America, Europe and Africa.

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi was founded in Rome, Italy, by Mother Frances Streitel who was born Amalia Streitel in Mellrichstadt, Germany, on Nov. 24, 1844.

The Sisters are present in various parts of the world, with diverse cultures and realities, mainly in education and health care and particularly among the poor.

Our friends at Citizens Bank are helping Women readers with weekly financial suggestions. Here’s the tip of week:

You received your tax return, now what?

It's very tempting to cash the tax return check and spend it on that new flat screen TV or the new WII system that your children have been begging for. But choosing some other alternatives will make you a lot happier in the long run. Paying off that nagging charge card with a portion of the tax return will help you save a lot in interest charges. Consider saving part of your return by investing in a Roth IRA or increasing your contribution to your retirement plan at work, such as your 401K.

Hearthstone Historic House museum will re-open with new winter hours starting Feb. 18.

Hearthstone will be open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The museum will be closed Sunday through Tuesday, though group tours will remain available on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The changes are being made to decrease expenses in the wake of a drop in corporate and individual donations, according to Christine Cross, executive director for Hearthstone.

"With the economic outlook, we must be fiscally responsible," Cross said. "We want to remain a vital resource to our community and a place where people can come and explore the past.

"Temporarily taking away one open day will help us to remain viable into the future, not increase our admission price and, hopefully, allow us to continue to give our guests a great experience even with diminished funds.”

Guided tours will continue to start on the hour and half hour.

Tours last about one hour and guests are welcome to spend as much time as they wish exploring the Hydro-Adventure Center in the home's lower level after their tour.

Admission will remain $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 5-17. Friends of Hearthstone get free tours.

Tour organizers are welcome to contact the museum to set up a tour. Find out more by contacting Hearthstone at 920-730-8204 or www.hearthstonemuseum.org.

Jeff Pockat, Celtic harpist, will perform at the Neenah Public Library at 2 p.m. Friday.

Pockat, who has been playing Celtic harp professionally since 1988, is also a composer and music historian. Pockat researches the historic music and harpers of the Celtic people and the benefits of harp music on behavior, mood and the healing effects of the music.

Pockat plays an instrument that is patterned after one built in the 1700s.

"Most people called it a Celtic harp, but more specifically it would be a Gaelic harp because of the brass strings," he says. "This is a unique instrument. It's strung with brass wire like the ancient Irish harps were, and it's played with the fingernails so it has a unique sound to it. It's a heavenly instrument and there's nothing that compares to it."

The concert is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Fox Valley Plastic Surgery, Oshkosh, has been authorized to provide Latisse on a prescription basis to patients.

Latisse, manufactured by Allergan, is the first and only science-based treatment approved by the FDA to enhance eyelash prominence as measured by increases in length, thickness and darkness.

Latisse contains bimathoprost, which was first approved in 2001 as a medical product to lower intraocular pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

A side effect of the analog with patients who have used it is longer and fuller lashes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Latisse in December.

Cathy Hagene, practice manager for Fox Valley Plastic Surgery and the Renaissance MediSpa, believes the product will be popular with female patients in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

“In winter, all you can show off is your face," she notes. "Longer eyelashes will be a natural-looking, beautiful addition.”

Full prescribing information for Latisse is available at www.latisse.com and www.allergan.com.

Five area families have received the 2009 Families of Distinction award from the Green Bay YWCA, UnitedHealthcare, WBAY TV-2, and The Business News.

The families will be honored on March 10 during a dinner at the Radisson Hotel and Convention Center.

The 2009 Families of Distinction are:

Daniel and Maria Garcia of Green Bay

The Garcias have worked hard to prove that the American Dream can be a reality for their family.

Daniel and Maria both immigrated to the United States from Mexico. Daniel went back to school in his 30s to receive his GED and is now taking classes in supervisory management at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.

Maria has taken classes in child care and is licensed to care for children in their home.

Despite the time spent on their studies, Daniel and Maria have always emphasized to the importance of community involvement to their three children.

The Garcias are active members of St. Willebrord Church. Daniel served on the Parish Council, and he and Maria teach church programs, lector, and lead a prayer group.

Maria also works at the Howe Family Resource Center where she is instrumental in helping meet the needs of Hispanic families, serving as a translator and conducting classes.

The Garcia children are catechists, altar servers and choir members at St. Willebrord’s. In addition, they are involved in a variety of school clubs and organizations including National Honor Society, Diversity Club, show choir, Future Business Leaders of America, and AVID (Advance Via Individual Determination).

Lamar Hill and Ingrid Parker-Hill

The Hills have taught their children that with a strong belief in God and the right attitude, nothing is impossible.

Ingrid has served as a parenting teacher at Fort Howard School and has worked at the House of Hope. She is especially concerned about the issue of teenage pregnancy and is active in the local Adolescent Parenting Coalition.

She gathered a group of community leaders and found the resources to host an event on the topic of teenage sexuality and STDs.

More than 1,200 teens and parents heard the message that teens have “worth” and should not give themselves to just anyone.

Ingrid, and their two sons and two daughters are also active volunteers at The Salvation Army. They transport children to Wisconsin camps and recently hosted a southern barbeque for the Salvation Army neighborhood, where they made dinner for more than 200 people.

The Parker-Hill children serve as role models for other children at the Salvation Army. They are also involved in school activities, sports, dance, and community volunteering.

The Paul and Nancy Lancelle family

This Denmark family describes themselves as atypical.

Paul’s job requires him to travel 75 percent of the time, so the family needs to work together to make sure that everyone is taken care of. This can be challenging, as two of the Lancelles’ four children have special needs.

Their oldest daughter, who is now an adult, and their youngest son, both have Down syndrome. Since their daughter’s birth, Paul and Nancy have been active advocates for people with disabilities. Nancy is a board member of the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin and has led support groups for other families.

The Lancelles are active at All Saints Parish in Denmark serving as CCD teachers and lectors. Paul is a member of the Denmark Lions Club and the whole family supports the “Sting Cancer” group at Preble High School and is active in fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations.

The Lancelles’ middle sons assist their parents in the care of the their sister and brother. They volunteer for many community events and credit their parents for being good role models of service.

Deborah Moutry

This Green Bay woman is, by choice, a single mother of six adopted daughters and two foster daughters.

All of the girls were adopted out of foster care programs when they were pre-teens or in their early teens and each was facing her own set of challenges.

Deborah is a counselor who spends much of her professional time with troubled children. She has encouraged her own daughters to set goals and become productive members of the community.

She insists on a structured academic routine and teaches them to be independent while understanding the need for cooperation at home.

The Moutry girls have been on the honor roll at N.E.W. Lutheran High School and are involved in sports, music, and many other extracurricular activities.

Deborah’s oldest daughter is now attending college at UW-Whitewater and is a member of the Wisconsin National Guard.

The Moutry family is a blend of cultures; however, Deborah chooses to concentrate on the commonalities in their cultures rather than the differences. All of the girls have been taught to be proud of their heritages.

They have formed an interpretive dance troupe that blends many elements of their diverse backgrounds.

Kirk and Lori Rademaker

When this Kaukauna couple found they could not have children of their own, they made the choice to adopt and provide foster care for children who were abused and neglected.

The Rademaker home is seldom quiet. In addition to their five children, ages 9-18, there are always friends coming and going.

The Rademakers’ days are filled with the usual school, social, and sports activities. hey also include meetings with social workers, visits with biological parents, counseling sessions, and appointments with doctors and therapists.

The Rademaker children are of several different ethnicities. ach one is recognized for their strengths and assisted with their struggles, whether they are behavioral, academic, psychological, or medical.

By the make up of their family and the way they interact with their children’s biological parents, Kirk and Lori are teaching their children about acceptance of gender, race, disabilities, and income status.

Although they are all very different people with different backgrounds, they have learned to love, respect, and protect each other.

The 2009 Families of Distinction were nominated by friends and community members. They express love, care, and respect in recognizable ways and exhibit other qualities.

For information about attending the Families of Distinction awards ceremony, contact the YWCA at 920-432-5581.
