This month Women magazine visits Green Bay's Broadway for its Women Who Inspire feature. The business owners and employees on this street give the business district an exciting vibe. Here is what Holly Hebel of Whitedog Roadhouse Black Cat Cafe has to say:

What made you choose Broadway? I like being along the river in a historical district.

What do you like about being on Broadway? I enjoy being on Broadway because it reminds me of a small, close-knit town.
I enjoy being in a neighborhood that has independent business owners and supports small business owners. Broadway is a community of creative and friendly people that help to create a positive atmosphere for myself and my customers.

What do you enjoy about being a business owner? I enjoy the challenges presented to me every day.
The ability to be my own boss and run my business the way I want to.
Another perk of owning my own business is meeting new and interesting people every day.

What advice do you have for other women who are looking into business ownership? One of the best pieces of advice that I can offer would be to use all of the resources that your community has to offer. Look for guidance in other women business owners. Also, remember marketing is key.
Make sure you understand and utilize all the marketing tools available in your community. As an owner you need to make sure you are well known by community resources such as bankers and accountants. They are some of the most important people out there to help keep your business going.
Most of all, don't be afraid to take a risk.

This month Women magazine visits Green Bay's Broadway for its Women Who Inspire feature. The business owners and employees on this street give the business district its distinct style. Here's what Megan Melendy of Besselli had to say:

What do you like about being on Broadway? The thing I like most about having our business on Broadway is the atmosphere.
It's such a great feeling to turn down our street. The vibe, the other fun businesses, and the potential I see every day makes me so proud to say that Besselli is a part of the growing Broadway district.

What do you enjoy about being a business owner? Being a business owner has been a learning experience, but I must say I enjoy the fact that I am able to make my store my own.
I get to meet so many wonderful people, and last but not least I get to do something I absolutely love with my mom by my side, along with the rest of the Besselli gang.

What have you been doing to make it in this economy? The one thing we focus on at Besselli is customer service. I strongly believe that if you are working hard and making your customers feel welcome they are going to want to come back and visit.
It's a new year and I hope that everyone is able to feel a little less economic stress.

What advice do you have for women looking into business ownership? My advice to any other woman out there who is thinking about owning a business is: Go for it!
If you have a dream or passion to do something you love, then do it. I understand that opening a business is work, but it is worth taking the leap rather than always wondering what might have been.

Gina Nytes, Kaukauna branch manager for Citizens Bank, brings us this week's financial tip:

A budget may not seem like something that is necessary for most families.

When it comes to supporting a family, there is nothing more important than creating a family budget that not only everyone can live off of and that is truly beneficial to the financial security of the family.

By preparing a workable budget you know exactly where your money is going and you can plan for emergencies. A true budget allows for the things that are important to you, including entertainment expenses and the occasional shopping spree.

Even though you might want to give your family everything that they need and want, most people’s budgets are limited. Preparing a workable budget allows you to stay within your means to follow your plan. The financial future of your family depends on the actions that you take now. Here are some helpful tips to get you started:

• Think about all of the unnecessary spending that happens on a daily basis in your household. Most of the time people do not really understand the amount of money that they are spending on items like fast food, expensive coffee or snacks at the gas station. These are items that a person can go without. Cutting these expenses will help you save money.
• In order to get yourself and your family set up on a budget that is reasonable, you will first need to figure out what you earn each month and what are you monthly expenses. Once you have everything written down, you will be able to see how much money you truly have remaining each month after expenses are taken out.
• Next, take the time to figure out where expenses can be cut. However, be sure to save some money for things that are important to your family such movie or pizza night. You don’t want to completely eliminate all entertainment spending.
• Build a savings account so you and your family have money in the bank for emergency situations. This will allow you to depend on your cash instead of credit cards.
• Lastly, continue to reduce any debts that you and your family may have. Even if this is only an extra $20 dollars a month, that is $240 a year put towards paying off the balance of your debt. It all adds up over time so every little bit helps.
While it may seem like hard work at first, it will get easier with time. In the end you will see just how beneficial a workable family budget is when established.

In order to promote the benefits of chiropractic care, the Women Who Inspire blog honors area chiropractors in their efforts and achievements toward overall better health. Today we present Dr. Stephanie Krueger, D.C.:

Dr. Stephanie Krueger, D.C.
Krueger Family Chiropractic
Oshkosh

What made you become a chiropractor? I decided to become a chiropractor at a fairly young age.
My father is a chiropractor, so I grew up knowing a lot about complimentary and alternative medicine.
I highly respected my father and with his mentoring I learned to respect the profession; to make a long story short, here I am.

What is the best part of your job? I love being a chiropractor; I particularly enjoy it when my patients tell me what wonderful results they have gotten from my treatments. Who wouldn't like getting their ego stroked?
Seriously I am very passionate about helping my patients and truly feel a sense of accomplishment for myself and the patient when he or she shows improvement.

In a few sentences, describe how you can help people feel better. Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that works great for musculoskeletal problems.
Chiropractic adjustments allow the nervous system to function properly and promotes necessary motion within stiff joints which helps alleviate symptoms.
There are many different types of chiropractic treatments, so chances are good that you will find a particular technique and therapy that will fit your needs.

Where do you see your profession heading? In today’s economic climate and health care reform considerations, the chiropractic profession is going to grow as people start taking control of their own health needs.
I foresee people seeking out inexpensive and effective ways of alleviating their physical ailments, which will lead them to chiropractic. I admit I could be completely wrong, but I'm rarely wrong, just ask my husband.

Women magainze's Women Who Inspire feature shares the stories of local chiropractors and their efforts in helping people live long and health lives. Today we present Dr. Marilyn R. Dragosh, D.C.:

Dr. Marilyn R. Dragosh, D.C.
Breitbach-Dragosh Chiropractic Clinic SC
Kaukauna

What made you become a chiropractor? My father was a chiropractor; I grew up watching people come to see my dad.
They were in pain, couldn’t stand up straight, had severe headaches, they couldn’t work, or they couldn’t take care of their families.
These people were not able to live their normal lives any longer because of pain. I watched my dad take care of the person, not just the pain they had.
They would get better and I saw them return to normal lives, go back to being moms and dads, go back to work and be a contributing member of the community.
I wanted to do that. I wanted to help people become healthy and get well.

What is the best part of your job? Watching people return to “normal.” Helping them learn the skills and give them the tools that they need to stay healthy.
When adults or children are in pain their personalities change. They are short-tempered, fatigued, stressed and anxious. As they get better they lose all of those negative attributes.
I love watching them become nice again and be able to use their God-given talents and gifts.

What advice do you have for people interested in the profession? You must honestly want to help others. You need to be a good listener.
Of course you will also need to be able to touch people, all kinds of people. This seems like an easy thing but it isn’t for many.
The patient wants and expects you to care about them and why they are in your office.
The chiropractic school, just like medical school, is long and tough. If you want to succeed you have to work hard and study.
The rewards, though, are great. To see people get well is unbelievably awesome and well worth the time and effort.

What is the most interesting case you've worked on? The cases over the past 30-plus years are so diverse.
The baby with colic who is crying constantly, the pregnant woman with severe pain in the lower back, the athlete who can’t compete, the child who misses school constantly because he’s sick but no one knows what’s wrong.
The person being told to just live with pain or disability. He or she may have just about given up when someone suggests trying one more doctor.
Each of these situations happens frequently and each one is vitally important to that person or family.

How have you seen the profession change? I have been a chiropractor for more than 30 years. I was the first woman to be elected and to serve as president of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association.
I have seen dramatic changes in the political end, law changes that both helped and hurt.
I have seen wonderful advances in technology; MRI, CAT scans, digital X-rays, and scientific advances that have helped all health care providers understand how the body functions.
Today there is more of a joint effort among doctors of all specialties to work together. All of these changes have allowed me to do my job better and more thoroughly, which is a great advantage to the patient.

Women magazine's Women Who Inspire feature promotes the positive benefits of chiropractic care. The Women Who Inspire feature has taken the opportunity to share the amazing benefits local chiropractors can provide for those suffering from aches and pains. Today we present Dr. Kimberly Johnson:

Dr. Kimberly Johnson
Johnson Chiropractic
Oshkosh

What is the best part of your job? Being able to help people live the life they want through better health.
Often people have pain and problems which prevents them from either doing activities they enjoy or doing things that would create a better life for themselves and their families.
By working with children, teens and adults I get the chance to make a positive impact on people’s health and their future.
At the end of the day, it’s very rewarding to know that I’ve been able to be apart of people’s lives and helping them to live in a more pain free world!

Do you have tips for people who want to get rid of aches and pains? Start a stretching program.
In addition to seeking out chiropractic care, stretching is the best thing a person can do. It’s easy and free.
If people would devote 10 minutes a day to stretching, it would make a difference in their lives.
Using an ice pack or a cold pack is also helpful. You don’t need to buy a fancy ice pack, a simple bag of frozen peas works just as well.

Where do you see your profession heading? I only see positive things for our profession in the future.
We are a wellness-related profession that focuses on restoring people’s health without using drugs or surgery.
People are living longer and are more concerned about their health so they can enjoy their lives without pain or symptoms.
I think Thomas Edison said it best when he said, “The doctors of the future will give no medicine, but will interest their patients in the care of the human frame, in proper diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

How can you help people feel better? The word chiropractic literally translates to “done by hand.” Through gentle manipulation of the spine either performed by hand or a small instrument, I apply a controlled force to the joints that help to restore spinal movement. The result is a decrease in pain and improvement in mobility. We help the patients make better choices through talking about their diet, recommending stretches and exercises, and maintaining proper health by aligning the spine.

Women's magazine praises the hard work and dedication of chiropractic care. Through its Women Who Inspire feature, Women magazine is able to highlight the efforts of local chiropractors. Today we present Dr. Meggan Tank, D.C.:

Dr. Meggan Tank, D.C.
B'Wel Chiropractic and Health Associates, Inc.
Appleton

What made you become a chiropractor? I became a chiropractor because chiropractic helped me significantly throughout my childhood.
I suffered from severe asthma, among other things, and no other health care provider was able to help me.
My family turned to chiropractic and my symptoms began to disappear and my quality of life improved significantly.
Since then it became my passion to become a chiropractor myself and help as many people as I can live healthier, happier lives.

What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is to be able to interact with patients everyday and see the improvements in their quality of life.
Every day is rewarding and exciting!

What advice do you have for people interested in the profession? I would advise anyone interested in becoming a chiropractor to pursue their dreams and attend chiropractic college.
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication but it is extremely fulfilling and well worth the effort. Chiropractic is a wonderful profession to be a part of.

Gina Nytes, Kaukauna branch manager for Citizens Bank, brings us this week's financial tip:

Financial planning can be fun and rewarding. When children learn how to be financially responsible at a young age, they are more likely to grow up being less dependent on others for funds. Children can learn a great deal if you, as parents, provide insight on budgeting. So why not take advantage of every day money lessons to help your children build a foundation for good financial habits.
• Allowances – Teach your child that money is earned through hard work. Discuss and identify with your child the different ways for them to earn money through helping out at home. This may include doing the dishes, taking out the trash, mowing the lawn, keeping their room clean, etc. Help them make a list of their chores and a chart to track their progress.
• Shopping – When making a grocery list, get your child involved with cutting out and organizing the coupons for that shopping trip. When shopping have your child help you match up the coupon to the item being bought. This is also a good time to teach your child about comparison shopping, the difference between a name brand and generic brand and about waiting for items to go on sale. Lastly take the opportunity to teach your child about wants (items such as cookies and candy) and needs (staple foods such as milk, bread, fruits and vegetables).
• Going out to eat – Almost every family goes out to dinner from time to time. Take this opportunity to work with you child on comparing menu items and the cost associated with each meal. When the bill arrives at the end of the meal, show your child how you double-check to make sure the bill reflects the order and how to determine a tip.
• Discuss Saving – Lastly, talk with your child about the appropriate place for keeping their money. This might be in a savings account, a piggy bank, glass jar or some other safe place. When your child’s saving goal is reached, remember to praise them for accomplishing their goal.

Women's magazine would like to show all of you the efforts and successes of chiropractors around the area through the Women Who Inspire feature. Today we present Dr. Krhisti Otto and Dr. Aprill Rykal:

Dr. Khristi Otto
Dr. Aprill Rykal
Otto Chiropractic, S.C.
Appleton

Khristi: What made you become a chiropractor? I followed my parents’ path, as they are both chiropractors, as are my brother and sister and 38 other uncles and cousins.
Growing up in a small town in Iowa, I would see patients literally crawling into my parents’ office after working long hours in the fields.
I saw first-hand the dramatic changes in people's conditions in such a small time. I knew that was what I wanted to do as well.

If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? To have the opportunity to see more patients before back surgery, rather than after.
Once a patient has had back surgery and it fails, it limits the body's ability to regain function as well as eliminate pain without exploring other options.
My heart goes out to those patients whose situation may have been avoided by having other options before surgery.

What is the best part of your job? There are too many to list. I enjoy empowering patients to make a choice regarding their health. I feel like a proud parent when a patient can take the information we give them and make an informed decision on what's best for their individual needs.

Aprill: If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? That more parents would seek chiropractic care for their children.
It's a common misconception that chiropractic is only for back pain. All the bumps and falls of childhood can cause problems in the spine that often won't show up for years or even decades later.
Imagine being able to save your kids from chronic health problems later in life by having them checked by a chiropractor. So many common ailments seen in kids respond and improve dramatically with chiropractic care.

Do you feel chiropractors get the respect they deserve? I feel that respect has to be earned, regardless of your profession or your title.
I believe that if I am caring for my patients to the best of my ability, then respect follows.

Where do you see your profession heading? Definitely up. More people are searching for a different form of health care that sees them as a whole person, rather than just broken pieces and parts.
Word about the benefits of chiropractic care is spreading and our profession has one of the highest patient satisfaction ratings out there.
I can only see it growing as more people experience first-hand the positive impact chiropractic care has on their health and the health of their families.

The Women Who Inspire feature hopes to inform all about the benefits and results of chiropractic abilities. Today we present chiropractor Dr. Shae Doran:

Dr. Shae Doran
Breath of Life Chiropractic
Appleton

What made you become a chiropractor? I became a chiropractor to serve families who needed hope.
I see lots of sick people every day who have tried the medical route, looking for answers, searching for a better way.
I wanted to help those families and children who aren't finding the answers they are looking for.
Chiropractic helps the body heal itself, so the answer comes the best way, naturally.

What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job comes from working with families and seeing lives changed.
As chiropractors, we serve the person, and the innate wisdom within that person. Miracles happen every day because chiropractic helps the body function and perform better. And that's an awesome realization!

What is the most interesting case you've worked on? All cases are definitely interesting. My favorite ones are the cases where we help children breathe better, sleep better, pay attention longer, swing all the way across the monkey bars or just live life with more vitality and energy.
Life is precious and chiropractors have the ability to enhance the quality of life just by removing the interference that's placed on it by life stress.

In a few sentences, describe how you can help people feel better. Feeling better is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to chiropractic.
The sensory portion of our nervous system that transmits "pain" or "feeling" only represents 10 percent of our entire nervous system.
Chiropractors are in the business of helping people function better. Ninety percent of our body transmits functionality and that's the bigger picture.
Chiropractors help bodies function better, bringing greater health, vitality and life to your years.

The Women Who Inspire feature would like to emphasize the 'amazing' abilities of local chiropractors. Today we present Cindy Scherer:

Cindy Scherer
Scherer Family Chiropractic
Menasha

What made you become a chiropractor? When I was 13 years old I was very ill, and my illness persisted for six months.
I sought medical advice numerous times to no avail, and one day one of my uncles suggested that my parents take me to a chiropractor. After being examined, X-rayed and diagnosed chiropractically, I began a treatment program to relieve the causes of my condition.
After two weeks of treatment, I began to feel so much better because my body was healing. The terrible symptoms I had been experiencing were gone within a month.
I told my dad on the way home one evening after being adjusted that I didn't know how it was working to make me better, but it certainly was.
I decided then and there that I wanted to be a chiropractor. I have been living my dream ever since.

What is the best part of your job? Being able to help so many people when they have lost hope of ever feeling good again.
Natural health care is truly amazing.

What is the most interesting case you've worked on? Some of the most interesting and rewarding cases I've worked on are with women who have not been able to get pregnant.
Helping women achieve this incredible miracle through chiropractic and natural means is phenomenal.

Women magazine's Women Who Inspire feature seeks to inform the public about the aspirations and successes of area chiropractors. Today we feature Dr. Jennifer Vollrath-Grosam:

Dr. Jennifer Vollrath-Grosam
Howard Chiropractic Clinic, SC
Green Bay

What made you become a chiropractor? I became a chiropractor after having headaches following a motor vehicle accident when I was in college.
Traditional medicine did not help my headaches with pain medication. After 18 months of headaches a co-worker suggested I go to a chiropractor and after 6 weeks of treatment, I no longer had any headaches.
I had planned to get my doctorate in epidemiology but went to chiropractic school instead. It was definitely the right choice!

What is the best part of your job? I absolutely love caring for patients and being a part of their healthcare team.
I feel very strongly about promoting wellness in families and I have the opportunity to start with the youngest members of the family.
Being healthy is a lifestyle choice that can be influenced from a very young age. By treating infants and children I can affect their lifelong health and I find that very exciting and rewarding.
I love and respect the responsibility I have in treating whole families to improve their quality of life.

Do you feel chiropractors get the respect they deserve? I have been fortunate to create an outstanding referral network from the Green Bay area medical community.
Our clinic gets referrals from other health care providers on a daily basis because those other providers know they can trust us to provide excellent care to our mutual patients.
I have definitely seen a greater co-management of musculoskeletal complaints over the past five years by working closely with all of the healthcare systems in the Green Bay area.

The Women Who Inspire feature wants to inform all about the stories and successes of area chiropractors. Today we present Dr. Jennifer Gelhar and Dr. Shelda Fosso:

Dr. Jennifer Gelhar
Dr. Shelda Fosso
Belville Fletcher Chiropractic Office
Oshkosh

Jennifer: Why did you become a chiropractor? I love restoring not only the physical well-being, but the mental, social and spiritual well-being of each and every one of my patients.

If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? I wouldn’t change anything about my job.

What is the best part of your job? Helping people feel better.

What advice do you have for someone interested in becoming a chiropractor? Always practice the chiropractic philosophy.

What tips do you have for people looking to get rid of aches and pains? It’s just like maintaining your vehicle. You need to have your spine checked and maintained every month.
The more you maintain your spine, the better you will feel long-term.

Describe how you make people feel better. I help people feel better by realigning their spines and taking away nerve interference that is causing their pain. I also incorporate muscle work, stretching, interferential therapy and ultrasound.

Do you feel chiropractors get the respect they deserve? I do feel that chiropractors get the respect they deserve.

How have you seen the profession change? I have seen the profession change by insurance companies paying a lot less in benefits.

Where do you see your profession heading? Chiropractic care is evolving from a complementary and alternative medicine to an interdisciplinary profession that is patient- centered. It is concentrating on wellness more so than symptoms.

Shelda: Why did you become a chiropractor? I became a chiropractor because when I was growing up I was in multiple car accidents, one of which was pretty severe.
I was used to seeing medical doctors and dentists and when I went to a chiropractor for the first time I was amazed that I didn’t have to get a shot, there were no medications and no pain during the treatment.
I responded very well with the healing of my injury under chiropractic care. By seventh grade I was hooked on chiropractic. I was determined to be a chiropractor and help people.

If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? I wish I didn’t have to deal with the politics of insurance companies trying to manage the care of my patients.

What is the best thing about your job? I get to see a variety of different cases and witness the positive response to chiropractic care. Every day I go to work and I love what I do. I’m so glad I am a chiropractor.

What advice do you have for someone interested in becoming a chiropractor? Be a chiropractic patient yourself. By being a patient you understand the philosophy behind the profession.
You also really need to have a passion for helping people.

What tips do you have for people who want to get rid of their aches and pains? They need to make positive lifestyle changes and seek chiropractic care to ensure good alignment of the spine.
The chiropractor can also help them with good nutritional advice and develop an exercise program for them to make a positive change.

What have been your most interesting cases? My interesting cases are working with children.
I specialize in pediatrics so it is fun working with children because they respond so quickly under chiropractic care.
I had a scoliosis patient who came in with a significant curvature of the spine. Under chiropractic care there is now no evidence of any curve in that patient’s spine.

How do you keep your patients healthy? Keeping my patients healthy involves good preventative care, as well as educating them on proper body mechanics and exercises for a healthy spine and nervous system.
Healthy choices today ensure a healthy life tomorrow.

Do you feel chiropractors get the respect they deserve? I do feel that chiropractors get the respect they deserve.

How have you seen the profession change? Twenty years ago there was not as much of a population of chiropractic patients and this has grown.
I see much more direct referral from medical doctors. Also, more patients who seek care have more questions regarding their health and well being when it comes to nutrition and spinal health.
Patients are taking more responsibility in staying healthy.

Where do you see your profession heading? I see chiropractic becoming more mainstream and integrated with the medical profession and allowing the two professions to work together on behalf of the patient.
Patients are looking for better answers about their health without the use of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic has been doing this for more than 100 years.

Gina Nytes, Kaukauna branch manager for Citizens Bank, brings us this week's financial tip:

Believe it or not, many couples find it very difficult to talk openly about their finances. Money concerns can cause problems in a relationship, so here are some ways couples can come together to get their finances in order and plan for the future:
• Get organized – Gather all important financial related documents and organize and store them in an agreed upon location. This way you will know that your important papers are organized and easy to refer back to at a later date.
• Track your spending and pay yourself first – Write down where you are spending your money and determine where you might be able to cut expenses. Also, don’t forget to pay yourself first. Have a predetermined amount of money automatically taken out of your paycheck and transferred into your savings account.
• Plan to save – Make saving a part of your everyday life and plan for future expenses throughout the year.
• Build an emergency fund – You never know when life will throw you a curveball and you’ll need additional cash. These types of situations can take a toll on our finances especially when money is tight. Reduce your stress by starting an emergency fund account. No matter how much you have to spare, every penny counts. So start to grow an emergency fund by committing to put a little money away on a monthly basis.
• Set goals – Decide what you want to do with your money. Do you want to pay off debts and or student loans? Buy a house? Save for a new car or additional education? No matter what you set out to achieve, write down your goals and how you are going to achieve those goals. Share your goals with your significant other.
• Review your insurance coverage – Every year, review your life, health, disability, renters / homeowners, auto, etc. policies to make sure that you and your significant other are adequately covered.

What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is seeing the smiles on the faces of my patients who are enjoying a more active, pain-free lifestyle after chiropractic treatment. I have a family practice; my youngest patient is 5 days old and my oldest is 97.
I also enjoy working within a referral network with many Fox Valley physicians.

What advice do you have for people interested in the profession? Those interested in the chiropractic profession must commit to treating people with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions in an ever-changing health care environment.
My approach since starting my practice in 1992 has been a multidisciplinary one. We need to stay within the scope of our practice and make a referral to the appropriate physician if it is warranted.

What tips do you have for people who want to get rid of aches and pains? In my 18 years of practice, I have found that one of the main elements associated with the reduction of aches and pains has stayed the same: exercising and stretching on a daily basis.
In other words if you don't use it you lose it.

This is the “You made me feel like a King/Queen note”
Take a moment and remember a time your loved one did something so special you felt like a King or a Queen. Remind them of how much you enjoyed that particular experience.
Examples:
Women: That time when it was snowing and I dreaded going to the store, you cleaned off the car and drove me and waited for me. You made me feel like a Queen. I love you.
Men: That time I worked late when I promised I would be home on time, and you still met me at the door with a big smile and hug. You made me feel like a King. I love you.

Women magazine hopes to express its appreciation for the hard work of area chiropractors through its Women Who Inspire feature. Today we present Dr. Laura Kemps:

Dr. Laura Kemps
Schubbe Resch Chiropractic and Physical Therapy
Appleton

What made you become a chiropractor? I chose to serve in the medical field in the military while attending college. After gaining experience in the medical field, I knew that was the field for me but did not know which profession to choose.
I had never been to a chiropractor. A friend who had been in a car accident was seeing a chiropractor and suggested I go with her to an appointment.
The chiropractor was so welcoming and loved her job so much. I knew this was the kind of job satisfaction I sought, and am happy to say I chose the right profession for me.

What is the best part of your job? Chiropractors use a unique set of skills to help unlock a person's healing potential. It is very rewarding to be able to facilitate the healing process naturally through the use of my hands and my knowledge of the human body.
Nothing brings me more satisfaction then when I have patients tell me how much better they feel, particularly when people are either new to chiropractic or they have been seeking traditional medical care without results.

How do you help people feel better? I use various tools to help people. The most important (and in my opinion, most powerful) tool is chiropractic manipulation.
Manipulation doesn't just "realign bones." It facilitates muscle relaxation and stimulates nerve endings to promote healing.
I also do exercise instruction, give postural and nutritional advice, and sometimes use soft tissue massage and passive therapies. I feel it is my job to educate people in how to take care of themselves so they can lead healthier, more functional lives.

Do you feel chiropractors get the respect they deserve? It is up to the chiropractic profession to educate both the public and traditional medicine on the benefits of chiropractic care. Many people have no idea it takes six to eight years of postgraduate education to become a doctor of chiropractic.
During chiropractic college we carry an average of 25 to 30 credit hours per semester. We learn how to examine all areas of the body in college.
We are also trained to recognize when a person's pain is not of neuromusculoskeletal origin and when to refer. In my 10 years of practice, I see attitudes changing in a positive direction, primarily because of education.

Women magazine would like to highlight the efforts and accopmplishments of area chiropractors through its Women Who Inspire feature. Today we feature Dr. Sarah Kiger, D.C.:

Dr. Sarah Kiger, D.C.
Kiger Steffes Chiropractic
Greenville

What made you become a chiropractor? My father is an amazing chiropractor, so ever since I was little I have always wanted to follow in his footsteps. I grew up with chiropractic in my life and I watched my father help so many people.

If you could change one thing about your job, what would it be? There is not much I would want to change. I love my job.
Some insurance companies are difficult to work with. Sometimes they put a limit on the amount of care we can provide to a patient which may delay or prevent complete recovery.

What is the best part of your job? Helping so many people get well naturally. It is truly an exciting and rewarding profession.

Do you have tips for people who want to get rid of aches and pains? Get moving! Exercise can help posture and biomechanics, relieve stress, and release natural painkillers called endorphins.

Our friends at Unity Hospice share a message about the traveling display "Portraits of Hope" to create awareness of Hospice Care and to give hope this February.
“Hospice” can be a frightening term. Yet, to those impacted by its comforting words, hands and care, “hospice” is synonymous with “hope.”

For the last several months, a unique display created by the Hospice Organization and Palliative Experts (HOPE) of Wisconsin, a statewide organization that provides education, legislative influence and partnership opportunities to individuals and organizations involved with end-of-life care, has been touring throughout the Green Bay area, raising awareness about hospice care. “Portraits of HOPE,” the traveling display, was created in 2007 upon the 30th anniversary of hospice’s beginnings in Wisconsin to help put a face on hospice care. Hospices throughout the state submitted photographs along with comments from patients, families, staff and volunteers.

What does “hope” look like? “Portraits of HOPE,” now on display through the third week of February at East Town Mall in Green Bay, best depicts “hope” in photos, but the words captured within the display can help paint a picture in print.

Joy Ride: “In the last 21 months, Dorothy has ridden a motorcycle, traveled to California to watch her daughters race in the LA marathon and prepares meals for the staff at the center.”

Gifts for the Journey: “John lives in his house with his dog, Diller. Even with congestive heart failure, he has remained very independent with the help of hospice and his caregiver, Barb. John enjoys playing cribbage, coin collecting and riding about town on his motorized scooter!”

Hospice is Dorothy. Hospice is John. Hospice is “hope.”
A not-for-profit health care provider, Unity is dedicated to ensuring that all individuals and the communities in which they reside have access to education, support and quality holistic care.

Gina Nytes, Kaukauna branch manager for Citizens Bank, brings us this week's financial tip:

Are you curious to try some simple suggestions to cut your utility expenses? Here are some suggestions that could save you money, improve the comfort of your home and help the environment in the process.
• Invest in energy efficient appliances – Holding onto old appliances may be tempting, but consider investing in energy efficient appliances as they use less water or electricity which will help save on utility bills and pay for itself over the long term.
• Unplug electronics – Electronics continue to use electricity when plugged in even if turned off. Save money by unplugging cell phone chargers, TV’s and DVD players when not in use.
• Take shorter showers – Taking shorter showers will not only reduce your water bill, it will help to conserve water and best of all, you’ll have more free time before work in the morning.
• Only turn on water when needed - Leave the faucet off when you are brushing your teeth or shaving.
• Weather strip your doors and windows – Take the time to caulk or foam insulate any place where outside air has a chance to get inside.
• Plant trees in strategic locations around your house – Plan trees, tall shrubs or bushes in your yard to help keep your house cooler in the summer without blocking the sun in the winter.
• Wear season appropriate clothing around the house – Get used to wearing sweaters and pants during winter months. You’ll find that you won’t’ need to turn the heat up at high.
• Check for leaking/dripping faucets – Check to make sure none of the faucets in your home are leaking or dripping. A slow dripping faucet can accumulate gallons of wasted water and cost you money.

As you can see the basic utility expenses provide the perfect money saving opportunity for practically every household. Try a couple of the above and watch to see how your utility expenses change.
